IMPORTANT: Virus circulating via instant-messaging
Published: 22 July 2010 10:30 AM

The IT Help Desk has identified a virus that is being spread on campus by programs such as MSN Instant Messenger and Yahoo Instant Messenger.

The virus is spread by instant messages that pop up and appear to come from someone you know. The instant message includes a link, which is typically about a Facebook picture.

Clicking on the link results in a virus being installed on your computer. The virus then spreads to everyone on your instant-messaging contact list.

It is important to never click on links in instant messages or e-mails, even if the message is from someone you know. If you have clicked a link and you are prompted to download or install a program you should immediately click cancel to prevent the installation of the virus.

If you suspect your computer is infected, please call the IT Help Desk at 231-8685 (option 1).
