NDSU forward Brett Winkelman was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America men's basketball first team and was selected as the University Division Academic All-American of the Year by a vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America on Feb. 25.
Winkelman, a senior from Morris, Minn., has a 3.88 cumulative
grade-point average in industrial engineering and management with
a minor in business administration. To be eligible,
student-athletes must have a 3.30 or better cumulative
grade-point average on a four-point scale, have sophomore
athletic standing and be a starter or key reserve for their
team.
It is the third straight Academic All-America award for
Winkelman, who was a first-team Academic All-American in 2008 and
second team in 2007. He joins former NDSU track and field
athletes Marc Steckler and Jill Theeler as the school's third
Academic All-American of the Year.
Winkelman ranks second on the NDSU career-scoring list with 1,838
points and is fourth in career rebounds with 815. He is The
Summit League's fifth leading scorer and fourth leading rebounder
with 18.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per league game, ranks second
in the league in free-throw percentage, and his 38 consecutive
double-digit scoring games comprise the second longest active
streak in the nation.
