Ever thought of yourself as a role MODEL? Ever wish you had one?

The MODEL program pairs junior and senior mentors with underrepresented freshmen and sophomore students to help them navigate their first years at NDSU.

MODEL mentors and mentees may be:

  • the first in their family to attend college.
  • African American, Latino Asian American, or Native American (ALANA).
  • from a low-income household.
  • students with documented disabilities.

MODEL benefits everyone who participates:

Whether you are a mentor or mentee, participating in the MODEL program will help you become a better student, a better leader and will add meaning to your experience at NDSU.

Becoming a mentor:

MODEL mentors must have a minimum GPA of 2.0, be a member of an underrepresented group on campus, and have time to devote to the program. Positions are limited.

Becoming a mentee:

If you are a member of an underrepresented group on campus, all you have to do is express your commitment to participate and sign up.

MODEL mentors help mentees:

  • Familiarize themselves with campus.
  • Commit to academic success.
  • Manage their time.
  • Get involved in campus organizations.
  • Develop leadership skills.

What Mentees do:

  • Check in with their individual mentor once a week.
  • Meet with other MODEL mentors and mentees for panel discussions and leadership training twice a semester.
  • Get involved in campus activities.
  • Pursue leadership roles on campus.

Become a part of the MODEL program:

If you are interested in becoming either a mentor or mentee, you should contact Malika Carter at (701) 231-7383, e-mail her at malika.carter@ndsu.edu or stop by the Multicultural Student Services office, Memorial Union 178.
