Many of parklands bordering the Red River in eastern Fargo are looping depressions of long-abandoned river channel. Most of these lands originated as meander loops, later abandoned by the river as oxbow lakes as a consequence of neck cutoffs. Sediment-infilling of the oxbow lakes, coupled with entrenchment of the present river channel, have left these meander loops behind as meander scars.
