The Journal of Applied Communication Research publishes original scholarship that addresses or challenges the relationship between theory and practice in understanding communication in applied contexts. All theoretical and methodological approaches are welcome, as are all contextual applications. Original research studies should apply existing theory and research to practical situations, problems, and practices or should illuminate how embodied activities inform and reform existing theory. Application articles should offer critical summaries of theory and/or research and demonstrate ways in which the critiques can be used to explain, improve, or understand communication practice or process in a specific context. Commentaries on applied communication issues may also be submitted. The editor is also interested in receiving manuscripts that present applied communication research agendas developed from the literature. In this type of manuscript, authors should develop and present a coherent framework of propositions to be empirically tested. Although manuscripts from any perspective and addressing any communicative situation are invited, particularly welcome are studies of how communication defines, regulates, alters and sheds light on contemporary social issues. Theoretically motivated research reports from grant-supported research are also encouraged.

JACR intends to (1) showcase the best theoretically-driven research that focuses on problems, practical situations, and practices; (2) support the study of communication that identifies, analyzes, and implicates the problems and practices emanating from the personal, social, cultural, global, and professional areas of society; (3) publish important and relevant applied research emphasizing rigorous methodology; and (4) demonstrate that the theoretical and applied areas of communication inquiry are mutually compatible and interdependent.
