Evidence Of Maternal Inheritance

Xenia - Part II

Maternal Inheritance

The 'Texas' cytoplasm confers male sterility for msms homozygous recessive nuclear male sterile genotypes. Regardless of the nuclear genes, the plants with normal cytoplasm are not male sterile.

The F2 of the T cytoplasm progeny will segregate 3 fertile:1 sterile which is 3Ms_:1msms. The F2 of the normal cytoplasm will be all fertile even though there is a 3:1 segregation for nuclear genes 3Ms_:1msms.

Self-fertilization of Msms Texas cytoplasm plants will again result in a 3Ms_:1msms or 3 fertile:1 sterile ratio. The female cytoplasm does not change from generation to generation. Self-fertilization of a normal cytoplasm Msms plant will produce all fertile progeny even though the nuclear genetic ratio is 3 Ms_:1msms. There are reciprocal differences that persist across generations.
