Evidence Of Maternal Inheritance

Xenia - Part II

Corn Pericarp Color

The pericarp is the ovary wall. In corn there is only one ovule per ovary. The ovary wall is maternal tissue. The pericarp color is determined by the genotype of the female parent. All kernels produced on an ear of corn would be expected to have the same pericarp color. Individual kernels on an ear may have different genotypes for pericarp color.

Example:

Red Pericarp (pr) is dominant to white pericarp (pw) color. A heterozygous (prpw) plant will produce kernels that all have red pericarp. Self-fertilization of this prpw plant will result in an expected 3/4 red: 1/4 white pericarp genotypic ratio in the embryos of these red pericarp kernels. If these F2 kernels were planted, 3/4 of the plants would produce all red pericarp kernels and 1/4 of the plants would produce all white pericarp kernels.
