Construction Management
College of Engineering and Architecture
Do you have an inner drive to be a builder of a house, bridge, highway, power plant, dam or any other physical facility of benefit to society? Would you like to manage people, machines and money? Would you like a job where you could work both in the office and in the field? Would you like a summer job opportunity while going to college? If your answer is yes to any of these questions, you should consider a career in construction management.
The Program
Construction management is a combination of engineering technology, construction techniques and management. The program is designed to prepare students for management positions in the construction industry.
The Mission
The mission of the Construction Management and Engineering (CME) Department at North Dakota State University is to provide quality programs for preparing nationally competitive undergraduate and graduate students for a successful career in construction. The programs are designed to provide educational, research and outreach opportunities that serve both the needs of our students and those of the construction industry.
Educational Objectives
- Provide to construction students the basic skills necessary to plan, organize and control resources to manage the overall construction process.
- Provide to construction students the technical knowledge and problem solving skills for a career in construction.
- Provide to construction students the knowledge and skills necessary to identify, define and compare design alternatives.
- Provide to construction students necessary communication skills for successful practice of the construction profession.
- Provide to construction students the professional opportunities and skills to pursue life-long learning within the broader societal context of the construction profession.
A Modern, Well-Equipped Facility
Construction management is in the eight-building engineering and architecture complex. Well equipped laboratories are designed for experimentation in each of the areas of construction and engineering studies. Classrooms have ample space, are well-lighted and contain excellent visual aid equipment.
Preparation
High school students who wish to prepare for a career in construction management should take as much math as possible. A unit of chemistry, physics and accounting also is helpful.
Career Opportunities
Construction management graduates are in high demand by contractors in all types of construction including residential, commercial, industrial, highway and heavy construction. Positions available include superintendent, project manager, sales, field engineer, safety engineer and company executive. Graduates are well qualified in the new and expanding areas of construction programming, cost control and project management. Management training provides enumerable opportunities in construction business as well as other business positions.
Accreditation
The construction management program is accredited by the American Council for Construction Education.
Summer Employment
Summer employment in construction is available to NDSU students enrolled in construction management. The Associated General Contractors of North Dakota provides summer jobs for construction management students when possible. The objective of the summer employment is two-fold: for the student to learn more about construction and to provide a good summer income.
Scholarship Opportunities
The Associated General Contractors of North Dakota, the Home Builders Care Foundation, a charitable arm of the Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead, and the National Association of Home Builders offer annual scholarships to outstanding freshmen and upperclass students. Contact the department chair or the NDSU Office of Admission for more information and deadlines.
