President's Cabinet
April 14, 2008


Present:  President Chapman, Prakash Mathew, Phil Boudjouk, Bonnie Neas, DC Coston, John Adams, Evie Myers, Rick Johnson, Gene Taylor, Jim Miller, Cathy Backer

 

•  President Chapman discussed issues concerning enrollment.

 

•  President Chapman will be meeting with a group to discuss issues relating to animal rights.

 

•  Boudjouk reminded the Cabinet that the R & D Showcase will be held at the Fargodome on April 16 & 17.

 

•  Taylor gave an update on athletic events.

 

•  Coston mentioned that next week he will be having three more legislative meetings in the state.

 

•  Coston gave an update on construction projects in agriculture.

 

•  Coston mentioned that the Experiment/Extension Support Staff Conference will be held in Fargo this week. President Chapman will take the group on a tour of the campus. Myers will give a presentation on diversity.

 

•  Myers mentioned she has been looking into the possibility of extending the 189 course to discuss diversity.

 

•  Myers is in the process of putting together an advisory board to discuss issues dealing with a Diversity Center on campus.

 

•  Johnson mentioned a group of individuals from the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform Genocide Awareness Program will be on campus this week.

 

•  Neas discussed a proposed cell phone policy for the campus.

 

•  Mathew mentioned that Spring Discover NDSU will he held this weekend.

 

•  Mathew discussed possible changes for future commencements.

April 7, 2008

Present:   President Chapman, Craig Schnell, Prakash Mathew, DC Coston, Phil Boudjouk, Bonnie Neas, Rick Johnson, Evie Myers, John Adams, Gene Taylor, Jim Miller, Cathy Backer

•  President Chapman gave an update on the Development Foundation Annual meeting that was held in Washington, DC, last week. It was a very productive meeting.

 

•  President Chapman visited with the North Dakota Congressional delegation while he was in Washington, DC, last week.

 

•  Schnell attended the SBHE meeting last week for President Chapman. He gave an update on items discussed at the meeting.

 

•  Miller gave an update on new staff that have been hired at the Development Foundation and Alumni Association.

 

•  Adams discussed the salary guidelines for this year. It was decided to go with the same guidelines as last year.

 

•  Adams mentioned that the employee recognition luncheon will be held today.

 

•  Neas mentioned that she has had a request to have the school song played on our phones when we put people on hold. She is looking into the cost and the possibility of this.

 

•  Boudjouk distributed the agenda for the R & D Showcase which will be held on April 16 & 17. He mentioned that Governor Hoeven will be holding a press conference today to discuss the Showcase.

 

•  Myers mentioned that she has sent an e-mail to the faculty & staff asking for interested individuals that would like to join the Diversity Center Advisory Group. She has asked interested individuals to send a paragraph stating their interest and what value they think they could bring to the group.

 

•  Myers has been meeting with individuals involved in the incidents that occurred on campus the last few weeks.

 

•  Myers has been meeting with both the Diversity and the Anti-Racism Groups.

 

•  Myers mentioned that at the next President's Cabinet meeting she will give an overview on the women's focus groups.

 

•  Myers mentioned that the Diversity Web Site is now up and running.


•  Coston discussed the bid process on the Hettinger project, equipment storage at the North Central station, Carrington station expansion, beef center development and the greenhouse project.

 

•  Coston mention that there will be a Bio-Energy video conference on Wednesday in IACC and invited the Cabinet to participate.

 

•  Coston attended the Extension Conference in Bismarck last week.

 

•  Johnson discussed a variety of personnel issues.

 

•  Taylor gave an update on athletic events.

 

•  Taylor mentioned that the President's Council on Alcohol and other Drugs will be holding a Town Hall meeting on Wednesday evening in the Alumni Center .

 

•  Taylor gave an update on the search for the women's basketball coach.

 

•  Mathew gave an update on enrollment.

•  Mathew mentioned that Student Government elections will be held this week.

•  President Chapman discussed the proposed NDUS 2009-11 biennial budget request.

 

•  Neas discussed issues relating to the usage of NDSU cell phones.

 

•  Miller discussed the Annual Development Foundation meeting that will be held the first of April in Washington, DC.

 

•  Myers attended the American Indian Higher Education Consortium 2008 Spring Conference in Bismarck last week.

 

•  Schnell gave an update on the advertising each institution has been doing throughout the state.

 

•  Adams gave an update on issues discussed in the NDUS Administrative Affairs conference call last week.

 

•  Adams distributed an article from the Chronicle of Higher Education, "News Analysis: Students May Need a Grounding in Agriculture as Much as in the Liberal Arts."

 

•  Taylor gave an update on the search for the women's basketball coach.

 

•  Taylor mentioned that spring football practice has started.

 

•  Taylor gave an update on the athletic reunion planned for September.

 

•  Coston gave an update on SBARE. He mentioned that James Kerzman has been appointed to SBARE to complete the term of Ole Aarsvold.

 

•  Coston mentioned that Galen Fountain and Fitz Elder, U.S. Senate clerks, will be visiting NDSU today to review two of our projects: Nanofibers Project and Agrosecurity Project.

 

•  Mathew mentioned that the Ask Me Campaign for Multicultural Students held last week went very well.

 

•  Mathew gave an update on enrollment. Schnell gave an update on graduate student enrollment.

 

•  Neas reminded the Cabinet that she will be holding two ITS open forums on Thursday. These forums are to define what ITS is about at NDSU.

March 17, 2008

Present:  President Chapman, Craig Schnell, DC Coston, Phil Boudjouk, Bonnie Neas, John Adams, Rick Johnson, Jim Miller, Cathy Backer

 

•  President Chapman reviewed the agenda for the Chancellor’s Cabinet meeting which will be held on March 19 in Bismarck.

• President Chapman distributed a copy of “North Dakota University System Financing Public Higher Education - How Does North Dakota Compare.” The Cabinet discussed the data from this document.

• President Chapman mentioned that we will have two honorary doctorates at the May commencement.

• Schnell discussed the Pathway program with NDSCS and mentioned that the agreement is in the process of being finalized.

• Schnell mentioned that the University System has decided that the final enrollment count will be taken on the 10th day in the fall and on the 11th day in the spring.

• Schnell discussed Tri-College.

• Schnell mentioned the progress on a variety of changes in NDSU policies 352 and 156.

• Johnson and Neas discussed a policy on cell phones.

• Neas noted that she will be meeting with Adams and Mathew to discuss card access on campus.

• Neas mentioned that a centralized surveillance system is being developed for the NDSU.

• Neas mentioned that Amy Dalrymple from the Forum interviewed her about being a woman vice president. Amy will also be interviewing other women leaders on campus.

• Coston is continuing to hold legislative meetings in the counties.

• Coston mentioned that majority and minority senate appropriation clerks will be on campus March 24.

• Coston mentioned that SBARE will be meeting on Wednesday to work on a report that will be presented at a later date to the Legislative Budget section. President Chapman, Coston, Hauck, Grafton, and Jerry Effertz will meet with Chancellor Goetz on Thursday to discuss the priority list.

• Miller gave an update on the search for two program directors and a major gift officer.

• The Development Foundation Annual meeting will be held in Washington, DC, this April. Miller discussed the agenda for events that will take place during the annual meeting.

• Miller gave an update on the construction of the President’s residence.

• Boudjouk was in Washington, DC last week to discuss federal funding priorities.

• Boudjouk noted that NSF notified us that one of our employees received the NSF Career Award.
