Jay Devitt, the Employee Relations Specialist, from Community First and past vice president of SHRA spoke to us about cover letters and resumes.  Mr. Devitt told us what to do and not to do for a good cover letter and resume.

Some of the things you should do are:  have your name and contact information on every page; if there are any gaps in employment, make sure to mention what you were doing for that period of time; do address and issues of being over/under qualified, and give an explanation of how you are still a good candidate for the position; make sure you do a follow up call to find out if the positions is filled, and send a thank-you letter; and use action words!

Some of the things you should NOT do are:  do not lie on your resume, you will get caught; you do not need to list out all of the computer applications (ex: word, excel, and access) just write Microsoft Applications; do not list a bunch of relevant classes unless it is really specific to the position, it just makes the applicant look desperate.

We received a folder of information about Community First and a list full of action words.  If you missed out on this meeting and would like a list of action words you can visit the career center web page through NDSU at www.ndsu.edu/career_center/, through MSUM at www.mnstate.edu/counsel, and through Concordia at www4.cord.edu/careerCtr/.

Caroline got more volunteers for the Salvation Army bell ringing on Wednesday, December 10, at Sunmart Foods in Moorhead.  There will also be a bowling tournament held this Sunday at 5:30.  The Secretary and Treasury positions were up for election.  I, Melissa Oeltjen, am the new Secretary, and Jesse Renner is the new Treasurer.

Good luck to everyone on their finals and see you all next semester.

Melissa Oeltjen

SHRA Secretary
