SHRA Minutes 11/5/02

Meeting called to order at 7:05pm.

I. Speaker – Dana Sue Busch, Director of HR for the City of Fargo
A) Private v. Public sectors of HR
1. Private:
- everything is kept very secrete
- employees may appeal a grievance ruling to a peer counsel
2. Public:
- employee information is very public
? social security, medical info, home address
- employees may appeal a grievance ruling to a civil service commission
- compensation:
? cross the board increases (annual increase) instead of merit pay,
B) Employee Relations
1. Recognition
- banquet budgeting = holiday party
- always understaffed, ratio is supposed to be 250employees/1 HR professional
- event/banquet or gift for years of service
2. Communication
- benefits, policy changes, etc. to all departments
3. Mediation
- subordinate/supervisor relationships: problem solving
4. Hippa-privacy Act – all employers have to be in compliance by April 2003
II. Business
A) Elections
-Congratulations to Eddie Sheeley, our new VP
B) Volunteer Activities
1. We will hopefully be “Ringing Bells for the Salvation Army” in the West Acres Mall before December 7th (watch for an e-mail) during a week night.
2. Other activities discussed
- volunteering at the “Mall” or Kohl’s to raise money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation
C) Lutheran Center Student Organization – survey
D) Professional Human Resource (PHR) Exam
-study group?
E) Community First Bank is looking for a financial analyst intern.
