Computing and Information Technologies Planning and Goals (CITPG)

2003-04 Annual Report of Activities

Approved on May 10, 2004

CITPG met weekly throughout the academic year.  Meeting Agendas and Minutes can be found at the CITPG website located at: http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/ndsu/cpg/.

Here are highlights of the year’s activities:

The classroom technology subcommittee worked with ITS to solicit input for selecting classrooms and buildings to receive new permanent instrumentation, new technology carts, and personal response systems.  The subcommittee’s recommendations were approved by CITPG and forwarded to ITS in the spring semester (Appendix A).

CITPG contributed to the Technology Fee Advisory Committee review process.

CITPG has formed a task force to identify campus needs for a general purpose UNIX system.

CITPG’s cluster subcommittee has recommended that two computer clusters be equipped with locks to determine if this measure will work to control outside interference with classes that meet in the clusters.  The cluster subcommittee also recommended that more be done to track violators of cluster policy and that policies related to computer clusters in the residence halls be evaluated to take into account increased security in these buildings.

CITPG’s cluster subcommittee worked with ITS to determine cluster software needs for the 2004-05 academic year (Appendix B).

CITPG’s cluster subcommittee made several recommendations related to cluster use and policy.  The report was approved by CITPG and forwarded to ITS (Appendix C).

The CITPG Networking committee presented a report which presented recommendations for configuring a campus wireless network (Appendix D).

A task force was formed to explore the pedagogical uses of wireless technology on campus.  The groups primary charge is to look at how wireless could enhance pedagogy at NDSU.  The task force reported to CITPG on April 5, 2004.  CITPG accepted the report and forwarded it to ITS (Appendix E).

CITPG appointed Joe Latimer to serve on the ITS Help Desk Consultant Search Committee.

Tom Moberg presented his ideas for restructuring the campus IT governance structure.  CITPG members provided feedback.

CITPG had representation on the Acceptable Use Policy Review Committee which was appointed by the Provost.  CITPG had a chance to review the recommendations and provide feedback to the Acceptable Use Committee.

CITPG was represented on the NDSU ConnectND Implementation Team

CITPG worked with ITS on a number of policy and implementation issues.  These issues included:

  • Campus network security
  • Desktop standards and support levels
  • The printing of large jobs from Blackboard LMS files
  • Classroom computer login and logout procedures
  • The availability of SPSS licenses for campus
  • Improving email service at NDSU
  • The future of the modem pool
  • File backup support services for campus departments
  • A classroom needs survey for NDSU faculty.  The survey remains in the development phase.
