  Field Research / Lab School
Field School
The Field School building will be visible from ND State Highway 36. It will be viewed against a backdrop of the rolling Missouri Coteau prairie.

The visitor will enter the Field School building to a Lobby where the welcome center/front desk will be easily visible. The Lobby will function as a staging area for students arriving by bus and will incorporate interpretive exhibits explaining the ecology of the Missouri Coteau. It will feature large areas of glass offering views of wildlife and wetlands. These windows will face north reducing glare from adjacent wetlands and optimizing the view for researchers and tourists alike. A large deck will be accessed from the Lobby and serve as an outdoor classroom and viewing area.

Adjacent to the Lobby will be the Lecture Hall/Dining Room. The Lecture Hall also features large areas of glass for wetlands viewing and access to the viewing deck. A serving kitchen and storage room will be located adjacent to the Lecture Hall, which allows the room to double as a dining hall with food catered from local restaurants.

The Research side of the Field School will be separated from the public areas by a landscaped courtyard which will visually and acoustically shelter the researchers from the more active public rooms.

The Field School will house a variety of research and teaching labs. The two largest labs will be dedicated to teaching university and secondary school students.Top of Page

They will be available for rent by bird watching groups and for corporate retreats. The six individual rooms in each lodge are designed as hotel rooms with private baths. A large living room/kitchen will be provided for social interaction and preparation of meals. A screened porch will allow outdoor relaxation during the evening hours free from insects and will be an important part of the “intellectual heart” of the School. Top of Page
