| General Education Committee Members present: Ann Burnett, Bob Harrold, Kate Haugen, Char Myhre, Larry Peterson, Amy Richter, Deanna Sellnow, Steve Smith, Orven Swenson The meeting was called to order at noon by Larry Peterson, Chair. Char Myhre agreed to serve as recorder for this meeting. There were no announcements. The first order of business was to review the general education status of ECON 105, referring to the materials previously distributed by Deanna Sellnow. A motion was made (Burnett/Harrold) to approve ECON 105 as a general education course; motion was carried. A motion was made Harrold/Burnett) to accept and approve outcomes three and six as presented in the documentation; motion carried. A motion was made (Harrold/Burnett) for non-approval of outcome seven, and after discussion motion carried. A motion was made (Burnett/Richter) for non-approval of outcome five, and after discussion motion carried. The motion (Smith/Richter) to approve ECON 105 for Global Perspectives carried. There was no report from the Humanities and Fine Arts and Communication Subcommittee. They had not met. Larry Peterson, Chair, reported for the Social and Behavioral Sciences, Quantitative Reasoning, and Wellness Subcommittee. They met and distributed materials and are scheduled to meet again on November 8th. Peterson requested that subcommittee chairs try to track down any missing course materials. There is a folder for all general education courses. A folder may be empty if a five year review has not been triggered to date. All files are kept alphabetical by department, and course number changes are tracked on the file to reflect current information. These files are currently in the History department office, with the intention of moving them to the Registrar's Office within the next week. Bob Harrold, Chair, reported on the Science and Technology Subcommittee. They have not met. Letters requesting resubmission of incomplete materials from last year's review went out to department chairs Will Bleier, Chiwon Lee, and Rich Hammond. Peterson suggested that the committee finish outstanding course reviews before he passes out new gen ed course requests for our review. The committee agreed. Peterson will communicate the status to those making the new requests. Deanna Sellnow presented an appeal by a student for an exception. The graduation audit showed that she/he was advised to enroll in the wrong laboratory course co-requirement and it is too late to make a change. The student was to graduate in December. A motion (Burnett/Smith) to approve the exception was carried after discussion. Sellnow noted that audits should be done during a student's junior year, after 90 credits, so that they are not caught unaware of any needed changes during their senior year. The committee discussed how to best communicate this to students. It was suggested that the ALFI registration page on the web include a reminder. Sellnow requested that we discuss at a future meeting changing the wording for how the science laboratory co-requisite is stated so that an embedded laboratory will be accepted. She will send the committee a suggested restatement by email to expedite approval at our next meeting. Sellnow also requested that this committee develop a specific general education appeal form. This committee will meet at noon on November 28th and December 12th, with locations to be announced. The meeting adjourned at 11:55. |
