General Education Committee Minutes
February 8, 2002

Present: Ann Burnett, Bob Harrold, Phil McClean, Stephen O’Rourke, Larry Peterson, Carol Prafcke, Amy Richter, Deanna Sellnow, Steve Smith, Orven Swenson.

The minutes of the previous meeting of January 15, 2002 were approved.

There were no announcements.

Prafcke presented the report of the Humanities and Fine Arts and Communication Subcommittee. Based on the material submitted for the five-year reviews they recommended the following courses be submitted to the University Senate for continuation as General Education courses:

ART 210: Art History I (Category A, Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6)

ART 211: Art History II (Category A, Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6)

CLAS 101: First Year Latin (Category A, Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6)

CLAS 151: First Year Greek (Category A, Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6)

ENGL 225: Introduction to Film (Category A, Outcomes 6, 7)

MUSC 112: Varsity Band (Category A, Outcomes 1, 4, 6, 7)

MUSC 126: Introduction to Music Literature to 1825 (Category A, Outcomes 1, 6, 7)

MUSC 127: Introduction to Music Literature 1825 to Present (Category A, Outcomes 1, 6, 7)

MUSC 303: Concert Band (Category A, Outcomes 1, 4, 6, 7)

POLS 210: Political Ideologies (Category A, Outcomes 3, 6).

Prafcke moved and Richter seconded the motion to approve these recommendations. The motion passed.

The subcommittee forwarded the following course to the Social Sciences Subcommittee for its five-year review:

ENGR 311: Impact of Technology on Society I (Category A, Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 6, 7).

The subcommittee put the following course on hold pending further information about its status. Sellnow will check on this.

THTR 281: Dramatic Literature and Style (Category A, Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 6, 7).

Prafcke moved and Sellnow seconded the motion to approve the following course for general education:

ENGL 343: 20th Century American Short Story (Category A, Outcomes 1, 2, 6). The motion carried.

Prafcke moved and Richter seconded the motion to approve the following course for general education:

HIST 271: Introduction to Latin American History (Categories A & D, Outcomes 3 & 6).
The motion carried.

Peterson presented the report of the Social and Behavioral Sciences, Quantitative Reasoning, and Wellness Subcommittee. Based on the material submitted for the five-year reviews they recommended the following courses be submitted to the University Senate for continuation as General Education courses:

GEOG 151: Human Geography (Categories B & G, Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 6)

PSYC 210: Human Sexuality (Category B, Outcomes 2, 4, 5, 7)

CSCI 122: Visual Basic (Category R, Outcomes 1, 5)

HNES 100: Concepts of Fitness and Activities (Category W, Outcomes 2, 7)

HNES 111: Wellness (Category W, Outcomes 4, 6)

HNES 217: Personal and Community Health (Category W, Outcomes 2, 4, 6, 7)

Peterson moved and Burnett seconded the motion to approve these recommendations. The motion passed.

Harrold presented the report of the Science and Technology Subcommittee of the General Education Committee. They are still working on getting documentation for the scientific method in SOIL 210: Introduction to Soil Science. Because of the lack of response from the instructor, they asked Peterson to write a letter on behalf of the committee to Paul Gleye, Chair of Architecture about ARCH 322: History of Architecture II. The letter will set a March 15 deadline for receipt of materials.

Due to lack of time, the committee was unable to consider student petitions and scheduled an extra meeting for Friday, February 15.
