Meeting Minutes

Minutes of NDSU General Education Committee
Friday, September 19, 2003
4 P.M. Plains Room/Memorial Union

Present: Brian Dougan, Robert Harrold, Kate Haugen, RaNelle Ingalls, Marina Ioudina Phil McClean, Char Myhre, Larry Peterson, Doug Rymph, Grant Striemer, Orven Swenson, Kristi Wold-McCormick

1. Larry Peterson convened the meeting at 4 P.M. New commitee members were welcomed - Brian Dougan, David Axt, Marina Ioudina .

2. Kate Haugen agreed to serve as recorder for the meeting.

3. The September 5, 2003 meeting minutes were approved.

4. Student petitions were reviewed with following results:

· Student 1 - approved use of a Canadian history course for gen ed; denied use of an engineering economics course for gen ed (both courses from U of Manitoba)

· Student 2 - approved use of course from Australian study abroad for gen ed, pending successful completion of the course

· Student 3 - approved use of chemistry lab from UND for gen ed requirement, however with no credit; still needs to complete the required 10 credits in science & tech category

· Student 4 - approved use of English composition course and a humanities course from U of Monterey for NDSU general ed

5. The Science and Technology sub-committee presented two courses for five year review. GEOL 304 was approved. BIOL 202 and 202L were denied renewal with recommendation that outcomes be re-considered if to be kept as a gen ed course.

6. New members were assigned to sub-committees: Brian Dougan will serve on the Humanities and Fine Arts group, and Marina Ioudina will join the Social and Behavioral Sciences, Quantitative Reasoning, and Wellness Subcommittee. David Axt will join one of these two subcommittees.

7. Committee tasks for the year were discussed. It was decided that after the December 15 deadline of the inventory and review of General Education outcomes embedded in majors, all submitted courses would be evaluated.

8. This fall the committee will inventory the five year reviews to compile an up to date list of the outcomes claimed by courses, and how the outcomes are being assessed.

9. Kristi Wold-McCormick will send by e-mail an updated general education course approval by prefix list.

Meeting was adjourned at 5:00 P.M.
