Tim Adair (1990) is currently a senior hydrogeologist with Ecology & Environment in E & E's Portland, Oregon office. He is providing professional services to the US EPA in Regions 9 and 10 as part of the EPA's Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team (START). Tim also works on large Federal energy projects including wind, natural gas, and carbon sequestration. For El Paso LLC, Tim is currently managing the geology and soils resource reporting submittal to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commision (FERC) as part of the application process for a proposed 670 mile 42-inch diameter natural gas pipeline beginning in western Wyoming and terminating in southern Oregon.
After graduating from NDSU, Tim moved to Pasadena California, to work for Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. He worked at Jacobs for a period of eight years completing many comprehensive environmental and groundwater studies. While at Jacobs, he worked for Department of Defense and private clients in geologic and hydrogeologic studies primarily dealing with the investigation and remediation of hazardous waste sites, many of these at military installations throughout southern California. Tim also spent 5 years with Tetra Tech in San Diego performing similar work for the US Navy and other private clients. Since 1998 Tim has provided geological/hydrogeological consulting all over the western US and has even spent time in South Korea performing a groundwater study and RI/FS at a large petroleum refinery in Ulsan, South Korea.
Tim is a licensed professional geologist in California and Oregon and a professional registered geologist in Wyoming, and Wisconsin. He also maintains a license as Petroleum Remediator in South Dakota and is a certified hydrogeologist in California. Tim still maintains a home in Oakes, North Dakota and can be found there every fall during the hunting season along with his two chocolate labs, Money and Penny. Shawn Tisdell (1990) and
Rhonda, his wife, are residing in Barronett, WI, where they are certified home care providers for mentally disabled adults. After graduating from NDSU, Shawn completed his M.S. degree at the Marine Environmental Science Center at the State University of New York in Stony Brook. At Stony Brook, he studied the extractability of metals from municipal solid waste compost. Shawn then worked for 2.5 years at Cooper Engineering, Co. Inc., in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. There, he was an environmental scientist involved in conducting remedial investigations of petroleum and agricultural chemical contaminated sites.
In July, 1996, Shawn retired from consulting to become (with Rhonda) home care providers. He, Rhonda, and their children (Nathan and Alyssa) are living, homeschooling, and working at home. The newest addition to the "family" is Pegasus, a colt born in May, 1998.
The Tisdells have 72 acres of land, most of which is forested rolling hills, meadows and bordered in part by small ponds. They are developing an environmental learning center: "Tread Lightly." The center emphasizes family activities and focuses on introducing the families to more environmentally responsible lifestyles. The environmental camp has a full enrollment, with the kids hainv built a debris hut and then getting to spend a night in it. The Tisdells envision having small cottages that the families could stay in for a weekend or a week that might be made using strawbale walls, entirely electrically powered by photovoltaics, and using a composting toilet and greywater treatment system instead of a septic system.

Joe Krieg (1991) is an assistant professor of environmental studies and anthropology at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Upon graduating from NDSU, Joe attended the University of Saskatchewan for one year. He then moved to Pocatello, ID, to join Judy (NDSU Geology Class of 1992), who was working on her M.S. degree in geology at Idaho State University. In 1994, Joe and Judy moved to Iowa City.
Joe completed his M.S. degree in geology at the University of Iowa in 1997. He then undertook his Ph.D. research, centering on eolian dune field development in northwestern Illinois -- trying to delimit the parameters needed to reactivate the dunes. Beginning Fall, 2002, he was an assistant professor of geoscience at Upper Iowa University. Joe earned his Ph.D. in Quaternary stratigraphy and geoarchaeology from the University of Iowa in 2005.
Judy and Joe have no children, but their hands are full with Conrad, an exuberant bassett hound (photo). They also have J.C., an allergic cat with a constant sneezing problem. Mern Metcalf (1991) is an information systems person for Buster's School of Street Rods in the Phoenix, Arizona, region. Mern notes that he foolishly resisted computers and the associated technologies right up until he was diagnosed with a severe hip ailment. Mern reports that now, with two new hips, he feels like a kid again.
Mern dealt blackjack and poker in Central City, CO, until Dec., 1993, at which time gaming burnout drove him to project management (air monitoring specialist, AHERA, and OSHA certifications) in the asbestos field. Mern notes that he grew tired of seeing Denver Public Schools pay hundreds of thousands to remove the best insulation in decripid old buildings instead of fixing the things they really needed. Like many other geologists, he notes that asbestos is a joke which has sidetracked a lot of good geologic minds.
In December, 1994, the Metcalfs moved to Arizona. There, Mern became a 3M certified fibermaster and troubleshooted and repaired fiber optic networks.
At Busters School of Street Rods, Mern is the information systems person, but he will do anything required to make the business a success. Mern notes that life is short, so he decided to try making a living doing something he'd enjoy.

Darrell Nodland (1991) is a field inspector for the North Dakota Industrial Commission's
Oil and Gas Division. Prior to taking this position, Darrell was an exploration geologist for Homestake Mining Company in Copiapo, northern Chile. There, Darrell was in charge of evaluating the mineral potential (especially gold) for Homestake's mineral holdings in Chile.
Darrell left Chile in 1998 (low gold prices put a damper on exploration). He moved back to North Dakota, where he helped his family out on the farm/ranch. Darrell became employed with the
Oil and Gas Division early in 2000. He is currently learning a lot about the oil business.
Darrell's hobbies include playing basketball, flag football, and softball --- plus, of course, disc golf. He resides in Dickinson. H: (701) 483-3177.
Jody (Solem) Tishmack (1991) completed her Ph.D. at Purdue University in 1999 and is an engineer and environmental scientist for Purdue's Physical Facilities Department. Working in collaboration with scientists at Purdue and at Eli Lilly and Company, Jody has developed a soil making process which converts several types of municipal and industrial waste materials into topsoil. Purdue calls it the "SoilerMaker" Project, and Jody is currently overseeing full-scale implementation of the project. She is part of a team of scientists, engineers, landscape architects, and campus planners responsible for reclaiming and developing more than 500 acres of gravel quarry near Purdue into campus facilities. Jody says it is the perfect job for someone with degrees in geology, soil science, and civil enigneering. While at Purdue, she will continue working on collaborations with researchers in the USDA Soil Erosion Lab at Purdue. Jody plans to teach as an adjunct professor in
both Civil Engineering as well as Ag & Biological Engineering.
Jody and Patrick Tishmack (Patrick is also an NDSU alumnus) have two boys, David and Bryan. Patrick will complete his doctorate in December, 1999, in the field of
Biochemistry/Molecular Biology. When Patrick is done, he will begin a two year post-doc position at Purdue in the Medical Chemistry Department. He will be studying shelf life
stability of pharmaceutical compounds using Solid State NMR and XRD. The Tishmacks

Patrick Cleveland (1992) is working on a law degree at Pace University in White Plains, NY. Pat is also employed by Levy, Phillips and Konigsberg, LLP, in the New York City. Pat's work includes working on a case involving water contamination on the Navajo Indian reservation in New Mexico/Arizona.
Prior to moving to New York, Pat worked in Denver for an environmental consulting, engineering, and architectural firm. There, he conducted environmental assessments in the "built" environment and also elemental field analysis using portable XRF methods. In the meantime, he began studying environmental law --- Pat hopes to complete his law degree at a school in the NYC region.
Patrick and Joan met in Denver and were married in August, 1993. They
have three children, Brittany, Garrett, and Weston. Joan is likewise employed in Manhatten --- and so can join Pat for bagel breakfasts on the morning commuter train. The Clevelands reside at 27 Caterson Terrace, Hartsdale, NY 10530. H: (914) 686-1277.
Joe Martinetti (1992) writes that he is now certified as a GIS Professional (GISP) from the GIS Ceritification Institute. Two states now recognize GIS Professionals and the GISCI certification - Oregon and North Carolina. In October, 2006, he began work as an oilfield geologist with
Tooke Rockies, a mud-logging company. He states the work is very interesting - "AND I GET PAID TO LOOK AT ROCKS!"
Prior to this, he was a GIS/CIS specialist for Interstate Engineering in Mandan, ND, and had employment as a GIS Specialist for the North Dakota State Water Commission in Bismarck. The main focus of previous work was supporting a Wetland and Wetland Conservation Grant from the EPA. Joe also had been using ESRI's GIS software (ArcInfo andArcView) and high-resolution DEMs to delineate closed basins within the Devils Lake basin.
After completing M.S. degree in 1997 at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Joe continued to work full-time on GIS projects for the Black Hills region at the U.S. Forest Service at Custer, SD. In July, 1998, Joe began working at American Digital Cartography in Appleton, WI. Later that year he was promoted to director of Technical Services. In March, 1999, he accepted a position with the Maxim Group as a GIS consultant for the Wisconsin DOT.
Joe and his wife Carolyn have three boys: Joseph, Joshua, and Jordan.
Judith (Rochocki) Krieg (1992): Judy Krieg has established her own company, EarthView Environmental, L.L.C., based in Coralville, IA. Judy, married to Joe Krieg (1991), previously served as a geologist and soils specialist for MMS Consultants in Iowa City. In 1998, she started a small business taking soil samples with her small drill rig. The business grew and in June 2002, she struck out on her own. Since then, the business has expanded to include two full-time employees, several seasonal employees and more than 120 past/current clients. She has worked with municipalities, developers, and government officials to obtain environmental clearances pertaining to wetlands, threatened and endangered species, erosion control and other sensitive areas.
Judy carries out soil interpretations for land use purposes, especially as they relate to wetlands and onsite wastewater disposal. She has experience in wetland delineation, and has designed over 600 individual and small community onsite wastewater treatment systems. Her projects involve soil characterization, plant identification, and hydrological studies.
Judy writes that she prides herself in being active in the community. She has provided workshops around the state for all ages on wastewater treatment, soils and wetlands, and is involved in community outreach projects including the City of Coralville's annual "Wet and Muddy Day" - an event involving planting wetlands with junior high school students. She mentions she also served on several boards and committees, and currently serves as Vice President of TAKO - Take a Kid Outdoors, whose mission is to immerse participants in enjoyable activities so they develop appreciation and respect for our natural world (www.takeakidoutdoors.org ).
In her free time, Judy likes to travel, kayak, fish, and go camping with Joe, her friends, and her two Basset Hounds. You can often find one of the hounds quietly lying down in the office, a.k.a. supervising. Joe and Judy write that they currently live in "beautiful Fayette, Iowa and enjoy spending time on the Volga River."

Julie (Lucy) Jordon (1993) is working as a Hydrogeologist for the Ground Water
Program of the Utah Geological Survey.
After graduating from NDSU, Julie earned a Master's degree in geology at
University of Montana in Missoula. Her thesis addressed the geochemistry of
a floodplain contaminated by copper-mine tailings. After a summer's worth
of working for the National Weather Service in Missoula, she headed south
to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she worked for North American Mine Services,
consultants to Kennecott Utah Copper. The job included exploring for
sulfate and heavy metals in the ground water, analyzing aquifer-test data,
and keeping tabs on the ground-water plume emanating from the gigantic
copper mine.
From 2002 to 2004, Julie carried out environmental management for Norwest
Corporation, a consulting firm in downtown Salt Lake City, for coal, oil,
and hard rock mining companies. This included environmental monitoring for
experimental oil-shale refining, mining-related lawsuit expert witness
backup, and some water-resource work.
In 2004 Julie left the private sector to "serve the public" as a
hydrogeologist for the Utah Geological Survey. At this post she is the
lead investigator for a ground-water modeling project on one of the many
thirsty valleys in Utah.
In her spare time, Julie races mountain bikes, rides her road bike, and digs in her garden in and around Salt Lake City. In July, 2006, she married her friend and most fabulous biking companion, Drew Jordan. Julie now goes by the name Lucy Jordan.

James Kreft (1993) and Holly (Torpen) Kreft (1996) are parents to Alexus Cille, their daughter born in 1999. They are also loving parents to "Hero," their dog.
Jim, after graduating from NDSU, attended the University of Illinois. In an occupation that originally was going to be a one-year break from geology and school, Jim is now employed at his father's lifelong business of Kreft Cabinets and plans to become the owner someday. Jim is president of Arlington Developers, Inc., which builds spec homes.
Holly is Community Development Director and Interim City Administrator for Belle Plaine, MN. She oversees planning, economic development, and the daily operations of the city. After graduating from NDSU, Holly attended graduate school at the University of Iowa for a year. She then became Environmental/Zoning Technician with McLeod County in Glencoe and later worked for the Planning Department Hutchinson, MN.
Hero is a Shitz-tsu, who loves to eat sawdust, spends the day in the shop with Jim, and sleeps with Jim and Holly at night. They report that he's not spoiled, just overloved.

Luke Rutten (1994) recently returned to Minnesota after working in California. He is now Forest Hydrologist for the Chippewa National Forest. Luke and Amy bought a house in Bemidji and his office is at the forest headquarters in Cass Lake. Luke and Amy are the proud parents of two girls. They are enjoying being back in the region close to family.
After graduating from NDSU, Luke studied fluvial geomorphology at the University of California-Davis, completing his M.S. degree in 1998.
Before moving back to the northland, Luke was a fluvial geomorphologist with Jones & Stokes Associates, an environmental planning and natural resources management consulting firm in Sacramento, CA. At Jones & Stokes, Luke was involved in river and floodplain restoration, habitat enhancement, ecosystem modeling, and surface and groundwater hydrology projects among other things.
