NEWS FROM DR. BROPHY (Chair and Professor of Geology 1959-1982) John and Peggy Brophy are enjoying their retirement in Corvallis, Oregon. They moved there in 1994 to be near their daughter and her family. Camping, biking, gardening, birding, hiking, and generally exploring their new environment (especially trying to decipher the extremely complex geology) leave them precious little time for mischief.

NEWS FROM DR. METZGER Charles 'Chuck' Metzger taught mineralogy, petrology, and X-ray analysis at NDSU during the late 1960's and early 1970's. After leaving NDSU, Chuck served as the Energy Advisor to N.D. Governor Art Link and the State Natural Resources Commission. On moving to Denver, he was appointed by President Carter as the Regional Administrator for the U.S. Department of Energy, Region VIII. After leaving the government, Chuck became Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of a publicly held corporation involved in the development of oil shale. He then served briefly as the Vice-President of a large environmental company and as a professor in the University of Denver's 'Environmental Policy and Management' M.S. degree program.

Currently, Chuck is the President of Metzger and Associates, an independent consulting firm concentrating in the project management of large technical and scientific projects. He has a consulting contract for the D.O.E. Yucca Mountain Project, a site being studied for the deep geologic disposal of industrial nuclear waste. He is advisor to the manager of the project on organization, management, and policy decisions and manager of the Booz·Allen & Hamilton technical services contract for Yucca Mountain. He and his wife Mary are presently located in Washington, D.C. Mary, recently retired from the Denver-based law company Holland and Hart.

NEWS FROM DR. BALACHANDRAN Chandra Balachandran is founder and chair of
The Dharani Trust in Bangalore, India. The Dharani Trust:
- Promotes inter-cultural understanding among people of diverse cultures, in all sections of society, through research in widely accessible forms and formats.
- Promotes understanding of human, environmental, and human-environmental interactions
to empower people.
- Provides a forum for academic research and activist work to benefit from each other.
- Addresses and promote issues of human rights for marginalized
people.
Prior to assuming this position in 2000, Chandra taught geography at Bridgewater State College near Boston.
