HDE News and Causes for Celebration
(6th edition - January 31st, 2007)

  • Caroline Homan, a graduate student in Child Development and Family Science, and Joel Hektner are presenting a poster entitled "Creativity as experienced by emerging adults in college: Associations with intra- and interpersonal contexts" at the Third Conference on Emerging Adulthood in Tucson in February.
  • Congratulations to Grete Peterson who was inducted into Blue Key on January 30th during her Food and Meal Production lab. She was in the kitchen serving, along with about 10 other students.
  • Extension Youth Specialists Linda Hauge and Joe Courneya have been invited to serve on a Regional Extension team to enhance collaborative efforts of the Land Grant institutions in the North Central Region as 4-H re-shapes Youth Development work in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET). A major focus of the team will be to strengthen programs in Agricultural and Environmental sciences using the resources of the Land Grant System.
  • The "Shoot for Fitness", Youth Archery fitness and exercise video directed by Joe Courneya and produced by Randy Wald, NDSU Ag. Communications, received Gold level recognition in the annual CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) in the Excellence in Multi media Category. The video has been produced for youth and adults involved in 4-H shooting sports and the National Archery in the Schools Program. Congratulations, Joe and Randy!!!
  • Extension Educational Design Specialist, Joe Courneya has been invited to serve as a panel expert on an NSF funded project, "Best Practices for Field Days Delphi Expert Panel". Courneya will join a group of faculty from across the country using Web-CT to convene the panel electronically to develop an evaluation instrument that will help coordinators of field days to more effectively determine the quality of those experiences for participants. Once developed, North Dakota will serve as a site for field testing of the instrument.
  • Congratulations to Aditi Hirani who received an Instruction and Development grant to develop an interactive component for an on-line Auto CAD class. The class will be tested in Summer 2007.
  • NDSU Extension will deliver the "Dining with Diabetes: North Dakota Style!" curriculum for a second year in seven counties. Funding for the project is provided from Dakota Medical Foundation ($10,000) and North Dakota Department of Health ($2,000).

  • "Dakota Diet: Healthy Eating Patterns Based on Regional Foods" was presented by Jane U. Edwards at the "Healthy and Functional Foods" symposium held at the NDSU Hettinger Research and Extension Center on January 25.

  • Congratulations to Marlys Bratteli along with doctoral students Kristine Bjelde and Leah Pigatti who just learned that their article Grandparent and Kinship Foster Care Licensing and Payment Policies will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Gerontological Social Work.

  • Ardith Brunt was on the Odyssey on Health radio program on January 29. She discussed reasons why people select the food they do. The topic expanded to include all age groups, since selections change throughout the lifespan.

  • Jill Nelson is a contributing editor to www.counseloraudiosource.net and has had a Podcast produced: The Person Centered Approach in Counseling: An interview with Wade Hannon. You can download this Podcast directly through the link: http://www.counseloraudiosource.net/feeds/cas048.mp3
  • Congratulations to the faculty who have been awarded the following grants: Nelson, J. R., Hall, B.S., Hoheisel, C. B. (2006). Instructional Development Grant: Course Development Project (CNED 790: Teaching Supervision). University Senate Faculty Development Committee: North Dakota State University.

  • Hoheisel, C. B., Hall, B.S., Nelson, J. R., Lajimodiere, D. K., Hall, T. E., Warner, R. (2006). Instructional Development Grant: Inter/Intradisciplinary Project (CNED 790: School Counselor and Administrator Collaboration). University Senate Faculty Development Committee: North Dakota State University.

  • Denise Lajimodiere has been awarded an Extension and HDE Mini-Grant for Applied Work in North Dakota. The grant will be used to develop an informational workshop on Relationship Aggression/Horizontal Violence (RA/HV)for Native female High School students on the Turtle Mountain Reservation. We hope to extend the workshop to Ft. Berthold. The research comes out of her dissertation research.

  • Brenda Hall recently began serving a two-year term as a board member for the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center of Fargo-Moorhead.

  • Margaret Fitzgerald presented a paper, "Adjustment Strategies in the Family Firm: A Comparison of Copreneurs to Other Married Couples" at the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship Annual Conference in January.

  • Carol Rusaw has the following article published: Rusaw, A.C. Professionalism under the performance-based pay reform: A critical assessment and alternative development model. International Public Management Journal (2007, February).

  • Thanks to the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) Educational Trust. They presented the interior design program with a lighting demonstration suitcase called the Optics Kits. The kit is designed to demonstrate three-dimensional light distribution patterns. The interior design program is one of twenty to receive this $1200 educational tool.

  • Thanks to Dr. Max Johnson, Retina Consultants, who is working in collaboration with HNES (Stastny, Brunt, Garden-Robinson) with his eye patients in Fargo in an ongoing study. Dr. Johnson has dedicated physician and nursing staff to form an interdisciplinary team with a dietitian to slow progression of participant macular degeneration (AMD). His office also purchased a Marco Brightness Acuity Tester to be used exclusively in the 2006-2007 trial: Relationships between dietary and serum carotenoids, lutein, zeaxanthin, and macular pigment/AMD.

  • Mark Schmidt, Rachelle Vettern and Tom Hall have been invited to present at the 2007 Missouri Valley Adult Education Association's Annual Conference in Minneapolis April 18-20, 2007. The theme of the conference is Practical Thinking: Addressing the Changing Ecology of Adult Education. The conference presentation will focus on identifying and dealing with the different generational issues being felt in both educational and workplace settings now that many are finding themselves interacting with colleaguesfrom three or four different generational eras.

  • Debra Pankow was co-author with Erica Tobe, Youth Financial Education Program Leader, Michigan State, of an article "eXtension: A New Educational Resource for Credit Unions" published in the 07 issue of SavingTeen a Credit Union National Association (CUNA) publication covering credit unions and their youth financial literacy initiatives.

  • Mari Borr was recently elected as recording secretary of the Association of Career and Technical Education Research and will serve in this national position for one year.

  • Stacy Duffield attended the Evaluator's Institute in San Francisco, January 10-14th, for training in evaluation methods. This training supports grant evaluation work with grants she is currently subcontracted with as well as for future grant proposals.

  • Stacy Duffield is also putting on a workshop in Wahpeton, January 28th and February 24th, for area teachers titled, "Reading Across the Curriculum." The two-day workshop is supported through the Wahpeton Area Teacher Center and a grant from the Southeast Education Consortium. The teachers can earn credit toward a ND reading credential.

  • Gary Liguori and Kristen Hetland presented "And the Survey Says..." on how to use PRS survey features in health and wellness courses at the 5th Annual Hawaii International Educators Conference.

  • Joyce Hwang had the following published:  Hwang, J. H., & Sneed, J. (2007). Developing a performance criteria model for school foodservice. Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research, 31, 111-129.

  • Hyung-Chan Kim has submitted two abstracts for Annual Conference of Environmental Design Research Association in Sacramento, CA, May 3-Jun3, 2007. Both abstracts were accepted for presentation. The title of the abstracts are "Case Study: Campus Building Sustainability" and "Case Study: Commercial Building Sustainability".

  • Brent Young presented a paper titled "Effects of a Math-Enhanced Curriculum and Instructional Approach on Students‚ Need for Post-secondary Remediation in Mathematics: A Year-long Experimental Study in Agricultural Power and Technology" at the North Central Region American Association of Agricultural Education Research Conference in Ames, IA., September 22, 2006. He will also present a paper titled "Does a Math-Enhanced Curriculum and Instructional Approach Diminish Students‚ Attainment of Technical Competence? A Year-long Experimental Study in Agricultural Power and Technology" at the Southern Region American Association of Agricultural Education Research Conference in Mobile, AL in February. Dr. Young has also been notified that an article titled "IMPORTANT ELEMENTS OF THE STUDENT TEACHING EXPERIENCE IN AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION: A COMPARISON OF COOPERATING TEACHERS‚ AND STUDENT TEACHERS‚ PERCEPTIONS" has been selected for publication in the Journal of Southern Agricultural Education Research.
