College of Human Development and Education
Research 2006-2007

During the 2006-2007 year, the College of Human Development and Education saw an increase in the participation of faculty in grant and research work.   Some highlights of the year are listed here, and a list of presentations, publications, and funded projects for the year is presented below.

Grants & Contracts. Twenty-six HDE faculty members (50% of the faculty) received funds from external grants and contracts in 2006-2007 by serving as principle investigators or co-investigators.  Grant and contract dollars available for use in the 2006-2007 year were nearly the same as in the 2005-2006 year. The approximate grant/contract dollars available for use during this year was $5,011,085.  This includes funds awarded this year for use during this year ($737,990) and funds used this year awarded in multi-year projects funded in previous years ($4,273,095). HDE Extension faculty funding and funding received by HDE faculty in collaboration with persons outside the College of HDE were included. Continuing funding from previous years to be spent in 2007-2008 and notification of additional new awards given prior to July 1st to be used after July 1, 2007 totaled $1,624,813.

Overall, there has been a steady increase in participation by faculty in writing successful grants and contracts with 14 faculty participating in 2003-2004, 22 participating in 2004-2005, 23 participating in 2005-2006, and 26 participating in 2006-2007.  Grant dollars available for use during the year has grown from 1.2 million in 2003-2004 to over five million for each of the last two years.

Refereed Publications.  Seventeen faculty members (33%) published in refereed journals.  Eighteen refereed articles were published.  This number represents .35 articles published per tenured or tenure-track faculty member and a 1.06 article average for faculty who had at least one article published.  A total of 17 other refereed articles, abstracts, book chapters and proceedings were also published by 12 (23%) full-time faculty.  Of the faculty who published other refereed publications, the publication rate was 1.4 per faculty member. Although this reflects a decrease in publications from 2005-2006, it is still an increase over the 2004-2005 and 2003-2004 years.

Other Publications.  Other publications included extension publications, newsletters, popular articles, book reviews and invited publications.  A total of 123 “other” publications were published in 2006-2007. These publications include many Extension program newsletters, news releases, and education programs.

Presentations.  Faculty members presented six refereed papers at international meetings and 60 at national meetings. A total of 36 faculty members (69%) presented at national or international meetings.  Faculty members also presented a total of 28 refereed presentations at regional, state and local meetings.  Twenty-one invited presentations were made at the international and national level and 74 invited presentations were made at the regional, state and local level.
