What is National History Day?

  • National History Day is not just a day. It is a yearlong educational program that encourages and inspires teachers, students, and their parents to acti April 23, 2008ffers educators the opportunity to teach their curriculum from an interesting and exciting new perspective. Interaction with local agencies and individuals provides a truly interactive learning environment for students and educators. Regional, state, and national competitions allow students to receive recognition for their hard work in the form of certificates, medals, trophies or monetary rewards. Students also benefit from the opportunity to engage with others who share their enthusiasm for history. Check out ND's great history resources.

What is the 2008 Theme?

  • The theme for 2008 is Conflict and Compromise in History
    When educators focus their existing curriculum around the theme, students learn to identify and explore numerous forms and instruments of communication and their impact on the course of history. For a complete description of the theme and how it will compliment your curriculum request a copy of the Curriculum Book from your state coordinator or view it on line in Adobe PDF.

How does the NHD program work?

  • Each year, students participate in regional, state and national competitions. Students can work individually or in groups, and may choose one of four options for their History Day project:
    • Individual paper
    • Performance
    • Media documentary
    • Exhibit
  • Refer to the contest Rule Book for a full description of each.

What are the benefits for students?

    • Reading

    • Developing a thesis
    • Interpreting primary sources
    • Analyzing data
    • Synthesizing information
    • Engaging with others in the historical profession

What are the benefits for educators?

The National History program provides the following benefits and educational resources for educators:

  • Specific guidelines for meeting national education standards
  • Curriculum ideas, lesson plans, and bibliographic references in the NHD Curriculum Book
  • Access to primary sources and how to interpret them in the Our Documents teacher sourcebook.
  • Excellent assessment tools through comprehensive projects and scoring rubrics
  • Workshop training in how to access local, state, and national resources such as:
    • Libraries
    • Museums
    • Traveling exhibits
    • Historical societies
    • Individuals in the historical profession
  • A handbook for North Dakota Educators. Learn how to implement NHD in your classroom.
