Getting Started:

Get an NDSU Electronic ID and e-mail account

Your Electronic ID grants you to access to NDSU webmail, the computer clusters, Internet access from the residence halls, and classroom tools and resources (like Blackboard).

You can activate your Electronic ID the week before school starts. To activate your Electronic ID, go to http://enroll.nodak.edu and follow the instructions.

Use Webmail, NDSU's online e-mail program, to access your e-mail.

Get information about public computer labs, software, and printing

NDSU has more than twenty public computer labs (mostly Windows) with current versions of popular software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, and Macromedia Dreamweaver.

A responsible printing initiative has been launched on campus in order to reduce the amount of wasted paper. For more information, see the list of frequently asked questions on the NDSU Student Government Web site.

For more information about all of these topics, visit the ITS Web site.

Get Internet access in the Residence Halls

See the "Connecting from Residence Halls" section on the Internet Access Web page for instructions on how to set up your Internet connection.

Wireless access is not available in the Residence Halls.

Don't hog bandwidth--watch this short video for information:

Get wireless access

An official NDSU wireless network is now available in several locations on campus. This allows NDSU students, staff, and faculty with mobile computing devices to use the campus network and the Internet without an Ethernet cable.

If mobile access is important to you, equip your laptop with a wireless network card, and see the Web site (above) for further requirements.

Wireless access is not available in the Residence Halls.

Get a computer

You are not required to bring a computer to campus. Some students choose to use the public computer clusters.

However, if you are planning to purchase a new computer, the Varsity Mart (the NDSU bookstore) is a good place to start. The Varsity Mart Computer Store stocks a selection of Apple, DakTech, and Sony laptops. To purchase a Dell computer, with an NDSU discount, go to www.dell.com/ndsu.

The Varsity Mart Computer Store received special higher education pricing on Microsoft, Adobe, Macromedia, and Apple software. A University ID is required.

Get secure - Stay secure

Use Windows Update Service: Reference this Microsoft help document on how to use the Windows Update Service (hosted by Microsoft).

Protect yourself from viruses and Internet worms: Install FREE anti-virus software which is available for NDSU students, faculty and staff. You will need your Electronic ID to download this free software. Watch this short video about worms:

Worms (For fast Internet connections)

Worms (For slow Internet connections)

Keep yourself protected: Make sure your anti-virus software is set up to check daily for new virus definitions. If you do not do this, you will not be protected against new viruses.

You can protect yourself even more by becoming aware of the guidelines for using computers responsibly (and legally) at NDSU.

Get and use a Personal Response System (PRS)

PRS is a tool for active learning in the classroom. Many instructors at NDSU use PRS during class so that all students can participate in question-and-answer sessions.

What should I do if my instructor requires PRS?

  • Purchase the PRS transmitter from the Varsity Mart. It will work for all classes where a PRS is required.
  • Register your PRS at www.ndsu.edu/prs.
  • Bring your PRS to every class period.
  • Use your PRS to answer questions.
  • For more information on PRS, see www.ndsu.edu/prs.
