DESCRIPTION: Use molecular genetics to detect potato pathogens and to differentiate isolates of plant pathogens using molecular techniques, such as but not limited to RFLP, AFLP, PCR, BOX-PCR, microsatellite DNA markers. Conduct laboratory and greenhouse experiments on pathogens of significance to the potato industry. This involves the use of proper microbiological techniques to study and identify fungal, bacterial, phytoplasma, and viral pathogens in designing and conducting laboratory and greenhouse experiments. Assist in the development of appropriate experiments, collect and analyze data, interpret results, formulate conclusions and document in a final written report. Communicate with colleagues and fellow professionals. Manage personnel, facilities, equipment and supplies. Follow safety rules, help identify unsafe working conditions, stop co-workers who are working in an unsafe manner.
MINIMUM 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • MS degree in microbiology, plant pathology or biology with expertise in mycology, bacteriology, virology, biochemistry or molecular biology
  • Minimum of two years experience in a microbiological laboratory working with the identification of microbes, both classical and modern methods
  • Demonstrated experiences supervising two or more subordinates simultaneously
  • Experiences managing supplies in a well equipped microbiology laboratory
  • Experience working in a safe environment with hazardous materials
  • Requires operation of precision analytical equipment such as electrophoresis equipment, PCR engines/thermocycler, fluorescent microscopes
  • Adept at using computers and data acquisition and analysis software
PREFERRED
QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with microsatellite markers, DNA array analysis, diversity array technology
  • Knowledge of plant pathology, plant pathogens, agriculture

In 2004, the university added a 75,800-square foot, five-story NDSU Downtown, providing a cutting-edge facility for art, architecture and landscape architecture students. A $10 million project renovated the century-old building to include studios, classrooms, a wood shop, digital media room, gallery and an outdoor sculpture area.

Currently, the university is in the process of enlarging its presence in the downtown area with the addition of two buildings. A six-story building, formerly the Pioneer Mutual Life building, will house the College of Business and the Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics. A nearby building, formerly the Lincoln National Life building, will become the new home to studio space and faculty offices for the architecture and landscape architecture department.

NDSU, which is one of two major research universities in an 11-institution state university system, is striving to substantially increase the number of international students enrolled at the undergraduate and graduate levels. NDSU also serves people across the state through continuing education and extension programs. NDSU also participates in the Tri-College University consortium with neighboring Minnesota State University Moorhead and Concordia College.
