The area specialist will have primary crop production educational program responsibilities in the northwest/north central part of North Dakota. Headquarters for this position is the NDSU-North Central Research Extension Center (NCREC), located one mile south of Minot, North Dakota. Minot is a city of 35,000 in north central North Dakota. The area is noted for small grain, oilseed, and livestock production. Minot is the home of Minot State University which is a comprehensive public university offering a wide array of undergraduate and graduate programs. Minot is an All American City with excellent health, educational, recreational, and community facilities and a modern international airport. | DESCRIPTION: |
The area specialist will provide crop production education and information about small grain, oil, and pulse crops grown in the region. The NCREC Director will provide supervision for this position.
This position includes, but is not limited to the following responsibilities:
- Provide leadership for the identification, assessment, coordination, and delivery of crop production programs in the region. Assist in providing leadership and assistance to statewide crop production related programs. This will be accomplished through cooperation with appropriate area and state extension specialists, research faculty, extension agents, and NCREC staff and faculty. Provide program leadership for at least one major crop and weed science program effort with regional/statewide emphasis.
- Provide special program leadership emphasis in crop production information.
- Provide crop and weed science information to producers, extension agents, and industry personnel through personal contact and a variety of educational media including meetings, field days, news releases, videos, publication, electronic delivery, and other methods as appropriate.
- Communicate with other extension specialists and appropriate research extension center researchers and producers about issues that need new or additional research. When appropriate, provide leadership for the development of demonstration and applied research as an educational tool to address the needs of clientele.
- Collaborate with agencies, industry, crop organizations, and crop commodity groups, as appropriate, to teach and provide comprehensive cropping systems programming.
- Secure grant funding to support research projects and other programming efforts.

| MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: |
- Master’s degree in crop and weed science or closely related discipline.
- Course work and experience in agronomy, crop disease, crop insect, and weed management.
- Ability to demonstrate professional and technical competency in crop and weed science.
- Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
- Experience with and commitment to enhancing skills in anticipatory planning, needs assessment, interdisciplinary program delivery, networking and coalition building, program evaluation, and distance learning strategies.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in working with varied audiences, with individuals and groups, as a team member.
- Demonstrated skills in computer, data analysis and presentation, web-based education and communication, and other electronic equipment usage.
- Valid driver’s license.

| PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: |
- Ph.D. in crop and weed science or related discipline.
- Work experience in an extension and/or land grant university system.
- Experience with Midwest or Northern Great Plains agriculture.
- Documented success in securing grant funds.
- Active Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) status.
