PREVENTION AND AWARENESS

 

Wildfire awareness and prevention efforts are encouraged at all levels through a comprehensive information and education effort developed in cooperation with the North Dakota Fire Council.

Firewise N D:

The North Dakota Forest Service has initiated the "Firewise N D"program to promote wildfire awareness and prevention among our state's citizens. Information regarding wildfire safety steps and wildfire hazard assessments has been developed and distributed to Rural Fire Departments, County Emergency Managers, and at various high profile functions. Firewise Communities / U S A:

This national program is a project of the National Wildfire Coordinating Group';s Wildland/Urban Interface (W U I) Working Team. Its focus is to provide communities and citizens with the knowledge necessary to maintain wildland fire readiness while ensuring firefighter efficiency and safety in W U I areas. The program encourages community spirit and cooperation in taking responsibility for wildland fire safety. Smoky Bear Appearances:

As America's most widely recognized public service symbol, Smoky Bear is made available for personal appearances, and Smoky Bear fire prevention materials are provided annually to schools. Smoky Bear appears annually at sporting events and at local fire awareness events.

Smokey the Bear says only you can prevent wildfires

 

Smokey the Bear Poster Contest and 2nd Grade Prevention Campaign:

The NDFS Fire Management Program and the ND State Garden Clubs co-sponsor the second grade Smokey the Bear Poster theme within the Keep North Dakota Clean poster contest. The Smoky Bear Poster Contest educates youth about the importance of preventing accidental, human-caused wildfires to save lives, property and natural resources. The theme of the contest is "Only YOU Can Prevent Wildfires!";The poster contest rules and winning entries can be viewed at http://www.state.nd.us/dot/kndc.html.
