LOCAL FIRE RESPONSE AND MITIGATION PLANNING

The North Dakota Forest Service (N D F S) works with local, state, federal and tribal partners to facilitate effective interagency wildfire planning. The goal of the planning projects is to increase firefighter and public safety from wildfire at all levels by enhancing firefighting capacity, implementing hazard mitigation activities and promoting wildfire awareness. The N D F S seeks collaborative input from all interested and affected parties to enhance community fire planning. The N D F S also provides technical assistance to identify wildfire hazards and mitigation activities.

The N D F S has developed a Community Wildfire Planning Guide for communities interested in wildfire planning. Proper planning can help a community reduce its risk from wildfire and increase its ability to respond to wildfire. Planning can help a community protect its citizens and firefighters by having the community assess its condition and find solutions that will work within the community. The planning guide should be used within a community's strategic planning process, but can also "stand alone"as a planning document. The Community Wildfire Planning Guide (505 KB) is available in PDF format or to obtain a hard copy, and additional information contact David Geyer at (701) 328-9985 or e-mail David.Geyer@ndsu.edu.
