North Dakota Champion Tree Register

As a centennial project in 1989, the North Dakota Forest Service decided to locate and record the largest tree of each native species growing in the state. This effort created the first "North Dakota Champion Tree Register."

Because of the popularity of the program, it continues today! Nominations for native and naturalized (nonnative) trees are accepted on an ongoing basis. No hybrid species are accepted. The register is updated periodically as new champions are discovered. The goal of the register today is to still find the largest of each tree species in the state, give them and the owners' public recognition, and focus attention on trees in general while having some fun! If you would like to nominate a Champion Tree please complete and return the nomination form.

The 2007 Register of Champion Trees is available here in PDF format (2MB).

Hard copies of the "ND Champion Tree Register" are provided free upon request by contacting Glenda.Fauske@ndsu.edu
