Project Learning Tree

The North Dakota Forest Service sponsors an education outreach program to teachers and youth leaders working with students in grades Pre K-12 called Project Learning Tree (P L T).  P L T is an award-winning, interdisciplinary environmental education program. P L T curriculum helps students gain awareness and knowledge of the natural and built environment, their place within it, as well as their responsibility for it.

Crafted to help meet state standards, P L T provides the tools educators need to help students increase environmental knowledge, reasoning and academic skills. The Pre K-8 activity guide is packed with 96 hands-on activities each carefully designed for specific grade levels and learning objectives. Each activity provides background and preparation instructions; materials and time requirements; objectives; suggested variations and assessment opportunities. It is "classroom friendly" and requires minimal preparation to be included in lesson plans. P L T was designed by educators to be exciting, effective and fun.

High School modules for grades 9-12 are also available at workshops. Modules available include, "Forest Ecology","Focus On Forests", " Municipal Solid Waste", and "Risk Management".

The North Dakota Forest Service can provide 4-hour noncredit workshops or a 15 hour workshop that is worth one semester credit through N D S U. To schedule a workshop or to receive more information contact  Glenda at Glenda.Fauske@ndsu.nodak.edu.

GreenWorks! Grants

  Green Works Logo

GreenWorks! is the community action, service-learning component of PLT, built around action projects that partner educators, students, and communities. GreenWorks! blends service activities with the academic curriculum and addresses real community needs as students learn through active engagement. Teachers and youth leaders who attend a Project Learning Tree (PLT) workshop are eligible to apply for a GreenWorks! grants each fall from the National PLT headquarters for community service learning projects involving their students. The projects can be things like planting trees in a vacant lot in your community, starting a recycling program, or planting flowers by a city entrance sign.
