Agroforestry

Agroforestry crops offer opportunities to enhance farm income and diversify farming operations. Specialty crops such as Juneberries or raspberries sell for high prices and require only a few acres to be profitable. Properly designed windbreak tree plantings can increase crop and livestock returns. Multipurpose windbreaks can provide both protection and products. Wildlife tree plantings improve wildlife populations offering opportunities for additional income.

There are many forestry related opportunities to enhance rural economies. A combination of educational, technical, financial and research support is required to make these efforts successful. Federal, state, city and private sources are all funding opportunities for economic development. In addition, new federal cost-share will be available in the Forestry Title in the 2002 Farm Bill to assist private landowners implement agroforestry, windbreak, wildlife and other needed conservation practices.
