Steven Briggs, assistant professor of criminal justice, is the lead author of a recently published peer-reviewed article. The article, “Unanticipated Consequences: The Impact of a Smoke-Free Law on Assaults Around Bars,” was published in the latest edition of Criminal Justice Review, an academic journal housed at Georgia State University.

The article explores whether policy changes that alter social functioning of bars and taverns — in this case, smoke-free policies — modify the spatial association with crime.

The article was co-written with Andrey Petrov of the University of Northern Iowa and Samuel Peterson of the University of Cincinnati.

NDSU is recognized as one of the top 108 public and private universities by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
