SHARE

The North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station released four new varieties this year. They include ND1406HP soybean, Gold ND flax, Talon dark red kidney bean and Rosie light red kidney bean. ND1406HP soybean and Prevail hard red spring wheat, a new variety released from the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, were distributed for the first time through the North Dakota County Seed Increase Program.

ND1406HP is a new soybean variety developed by the NDSU soybean breeding program under the direction of Ted Helms, NDSU professor of plant sciences. ND1406HP is a conventional soybean intended for the high-protein, tofu or soymilk specialty markets.

Gold ND was developed by the NDSU flax breeding program under the direction of Jim Hammond, NDSU professor of plant sciences. It is a yellow-seeded flax that is adapted to the north-central flax-growing region of the United States.

Talon is a dark red kidney bean developed by the NDSU dry bean breeding program under the direction of Juan Osorno, NDSU assistant professor of plant sciences. It has shown superior seed yield when compared with other commonly grown varieties in the region.

Rosie is a light red kidney bean developed by the breeding program led by Osorno. It has shown superior seed yield when compared with other commonly grown varieties in the region.

Prevail is a hard red spring wheat variety released by the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. Prevail was distributed by North Dakota Foundation Seedstocks in 2014 through the North Dakota Crop Improvement and Seed Association county seed increase program.

These varieties may be protected under the Plant Variety Protection Act and can only be sold as a certified class of seed.

NDSU is recognized as one of the nation's top 108 public and private universities by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
