Annual fundraising competition to benefit lecturer's daughter

The fifth annual “Battle of the Cents-es” will benefit an NDSU senior lecturer’s one-year-old daughter who has undergone multiple heart surgeries. The fundraising competition, which pits student ambassadors from the College of Engineering against the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Sciences, is scheduled for Feb. 23-27.

Each day, the student ambassadors will collect donations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Memorial Union. All change collected during the competition counts positively toward each group’s total. Paper bills are subtracted from each group’s total. All donations are welcome.

Donations will be used to support Bryn Hamre, daughter of Kellie Hamre, senior lecturer of interior design. Bryn has undergone two open-heart surgeries and a third may be necessary when she is older. Bryn also uses a feeding tube to supplement her nourishment, and she regularly sees physical and occupational therapists.

"Battle of the Cents-es has always been a fun and friendly competition between the Colleges of Engineering and Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Sciences to raise money for a family in need,” said Carissa Keller, a senior majoring in civil engineering. “Bryn Hamre is full of life and her smile lights up a room. For everything she has gone though at such a young age, Bryn deserves the money we will raise from the two colleges. Our competition is a great way to raise money for a very special NDSU family no matter who ultimately wins the penny war.”

Gabby Anderson, second-year professional pharmacy student, said, “The Battle of the Cent-es is a unique opportunity for our colleges to not only come together and reach out to members of the community, but to also form friendships with one another. We would love help from our fellow Bison to make this year the biggest one yet.”

In 2014, the college ambassadors raised more than $4,400 for a Fargo high school student recovering from a severe brain injury.
