The NDSU Department of Mathematics is organizing a series of mathematics activities in conjunction with the National Math Festival April 16-18. The festival was designated by the Math Sciences Research Institute, the Institute for Advanced Studies and the Smithsonian Institution.

NDSU faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students were scheduled to visit classrooms at eight local elementary and middle schools April 6-10 and April 13-17. They will lead fun, grade-appropriate activities dealing with mathematics. Planned activities include presentations by faculty and graduate students, playing mathematics games with students and hands-on mathematics projects.

"Many mathematical concepts can be introduced in a fun, engaging way by means of games. In this way, we hope to instill in young children an enthusiasm for mathematics," said Mariangel Alfonseca, associate professor of mathematics. "The children were fascinated by the math facts we showed in our classroom visits this week."

The activities will culminate with a Math Fair at NDSU on Friday, April 17, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Minard Hall, room 112. Students, parents and teachers will be invited to participate in activities and competitive math games. The fair is geared for children grades K-6.
