The 2013 Lake Region Extension Roundup will be Jan. 8-9 in Devils Lake, N.D.
The NDSU Extension Service holds this workshop annually to provide information on a range of agricultural production and family topics.
"This is a great opportunity to learn the latest updates in intensive ag management, crop marketing, livestock and horticultural issues," said Bill Hodous, Ramsey County Extension cropping systems agent.
Both days start with breakfast at 8 a.m. General and concurrent sessions begin at 9:30 a.m. The general sessions are in the World War II Memorial Building. Concurrent sessions will be in the Memorial Building's basement and Armory Room, and the remaining sessions will be in the adjoining Ramsey County Courthouse's Historical Room and meeting room.
General session topics on Jan. 8 are: a small-grain variety trial update, stripe rust, engineering fields for tiling, the 2013 weather outlook, new research at NDSU's Carrington Research Extension Center, Roundup Ready patent expiration issues and enhancing soybean yields with micronutrients.
Concurrent sessions that day cover land values, the new farm bill, winter wheat fungicides, the art of grandparenting, tiling, cover crops, crop rotation, soil salinity and sodicity, soybean production, barley issues, new spraying technologies and sodium in people's diets.
Topics for the general sessions Jan. 9 include herbicide resistance, a corn industry update, fertility product reviews, a canola overview, sulfur fertility and/or deficiency, North Dakota Soybean Council efforts and the effect of a Canadian Wheat Board ruling on U.S. wheat farmers.
Concurrent session topics that day are updates on dry bean markets and research, corn production developments, vitamins and minerals in the last trimester of a cow's pregnancy, improving the feed value of low-quality feeds, cow pregnancy issues, land values, minimizing fertility loss, winter wheat survival during a dry fall, cell phone applications, soybean cyst nematode, the latest information on satellite imagery, the basics of wine making and research results from the Edmore tile drainage site.
