NDSU Women’s Club to award scholarships, launch year of events

SHARE

Three of NDSU’s women students will be awarded $1,000 scholarships at the NDSU Women’s Club Fall Event, kicking off the 93rd year of the women’s organization. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Mary Aaland, pediatric trauma surgeon at Sanford Health in Fargo, who will discuss her life from being “a farm girl” in North Dakota to leadership in pediatric medicine.

The event is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott Convention Center in Moorhead. Reservations, along with a $5 per person fee, must be received by Sept. 4 and can be submitted to NDSU Women’s Club, PO Box 1404, Fargo, ND 58103-1404.

Each year the NDSU Women’s Club sponsors a rigorous scholarship competition for NDSU women who have attained junior status. Half of the annual membership fee – $20 for general members, $10 for students – is used for the scholarship program, which is supplemented by additional contributions by members and friends of the club.

The fall event also introduces members and visitors to the interest groups that are a mainstay of the organization. The organization holds three seasonal events, but interest groups meet throughout each month. Among the groups offered are International Women, Book Readers Group, Midday Meetup, Poetry Writing Group, Valley Gardeners and Walk-n-Talk. One legacy group, the Sewing Group, retired last spring. New interest groups in development are Fiber Arts, Travel and Film.

In recent years, the club has added an ACTion Team, volunteers who participate in community-based service. Organization internal volunteerism comes under the banner of JOLT – Just One Little Thing.

The NDSU Women’s Club began as a white-glove, invitation-only group. Membership now is open to any woman who supports the mission of NDSU.
