Think Tank - Regional Culture

Facilitator: Steve Ward

Mission Statement:

  • To more fully explore and understand the ideas of authors from the varying perspectives of the participants.
  • Too make citizens of the area more aware of literature and the ideas of other community residents.
History:
  1. John Helgeland, driving along in all innocence, hears on his car radio a discussion of a city-wide reading project and thinks, "We could do that."
  2. The first meeting is held at the VIP room, December 19. Conversation features coverage by The Forum; projects in Chicago, Abilene, and other cities; and possible books.
  3. The second meeting is held at Zandbroz January 16. Conversation features coverage by the Forum, home page (we have a volunteer-Mark Stone), involving high school teachers, the MPR/Trib/Loft project, books will multiple formats, and possible funding sources (Shawn Fisher will dig into it).
  4. The third meeting is held at Zandbroz, January 29, Conversation features muttering about small turnout (3), possible titles, need to identify existing reading group (Helen Goodin volunteered to work on this), and suggestion to postpone first book until October 15 or so. Steve Ward elects himself secretary; promptly regrets it will resign as requested.
  5. Next meeting set for Wednesday, March 12, 4pm, Zandbroz. Brings a list of books you think might fit (three titles or so).

Book Candidates:

Chosen book probably should be of reasonable length, not too dense, available at a good price, maybe by living author who could come to town. Some books recommended: Leaning into the Wind, Linda Hasselstrom, recommended by NDSU student; Main Street, Sinclair Lewis, recommended by NDSU historian Larry Peterson; North of Hope, Jon Hassler, recommended by Tom Matchie.

From Steve Ward: The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, Housekeeping by Marilyne Robinson, and Fools Crow by James Welch. Also, books by Garrison Keillor (probably Lake Wobegon Days) or Carl Hiassen who writes socio-detective farce about Florida and who has a Minnewaukan connection or by Louise Erdrich ( see also Matchie and Danz who recommend Erdich).

Greg Danz sent along a list which included Gravestone Made of Wheat by Will Weaver, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers, and Montana 1948 by Larry Watson.
