North Country Trail Clearing

The North Country Scenic Trail is a scenic hiking trail being created running through seven states: North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.  The combined efforts of people throughout the seven states working together will help to complete the trail.  Once completed it will become the longest continuous trail in the United States.  Parts of the trail are completed and are open to the public.  The final length of the trail will be approximately 4,600 miles and will spread from New York to North Dakota.  The east end of the trail is at Crown Point State Historic Site on the shore of Lake Champlain, New York, and it runs across the seven states to end at the Missouri River and Lake Sakakawea State Park in North Dakota.

The trail began as a U.S. Forest Service proposal in the 1960’s and in March 1980, congress passed legislation creating the North Country National Scenic Trail.  The National Park Service administers the trail along with the cooperation of other federal, state, and local agencies in each of the seven states.
