DNP Graduate Profiles

Elisha D. Anderson, DNP, NP-C
Hometown:  Milnor, ND
Year degree completed:  2010
Practice Area/Specialty:  Family Practice

Why did you choose NDSU?
I chose NDSU because of the flexibility in scheduling clinical rotations close to home as well as the availability of the DNP program.  Getting my doctoral degree was very important to me.

What helped you adjust to graduate school?
During my interview to enter the program I was informed of the expectations and need to adjust my work schedule to be successful, thus I entered the program ready for the challenge.  The classes were held just one to two days per week, which was also beneficial as I could limit travel time to allow more time with family.

Where are you currently living/working?
My family lives just outside of Milnor, ND, and I work in Lisbon, which is 23 miles away.

Describe your position.
I work as a family nurse practitioner with a great degree of independence in our rural area.  I see patients throughout the life span.

How long have you been in this position?
I have been with the Essentia Health Lisbon Clinic since February 2011, just after graduation.

Advice for future students?
My best advice would be to prepare yourself for the challenge (making changes in work schedule, prepare financially, etc.) prior to beginning the program so that you have the time necessary to devote to studies.  Get the most possible out of the program as every bit of information/education will help you in your clinical practice.

What do you like most about being a nurse practitioner?
The relationships that I have with patients is the most rewarding part of being a nurse practitioner.  I love having the opportunity to educate patients about their health, empowering them to take the lead in improving their health and making health care decisions.

What was your favorite class and why?
My favorite class was simply clinical rotations as you learn the most seeing the knowledge you’ve learned put into action.

Hobbies – what do you do in your down time?
I have a busy family with 4 children, so I don’t have a lot of down time!  When there is a break, we enjoy riding horse, working on the farm, watching Twins Baseball and Vikings Football, running 5Ks, and visiting family and friends.  I love to travel and see the world as well, taking at least 2 trips each year to explore a new place with my family.
