With a well-deserved reputation for excellence, the NDSU Bison are beginning the reclassification to NCAA Division I at the start of the 2004-05 academic year. During the proud history of Bison Athletics, 20 teams have won Division II national championships, and there have been numerous individual championships. Teams in football, cross country, wrestling, softball, women's indoor track and women's basketball have all claimed national titles. Academic excellence is emphasized at NDSU. The university has produced a Rhodes Scholar and 28 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. A total of 15 female and 13 male student athletes have been named GTE Academic All-Americans, as selected by members of College Sports Information Directors of America. In addition, three Bison women have received the Honda Broderick Division
II Athlete of the Year award. Two NDSU football players have been recognized
with the Harlon Hill Trophy, which acknowledges the top player in Division
II football. Eight Bison athletes have been named recipients of the
North Central Conference’s Stan Marshall award, which recognizes
