Jazz Festival Concert
NDSU School of Music welcomes jazz musicians Kristin Korb and Rex Richardson as guest performers and adjudicators at the annual High School Invitational Jazz Festival, February 1-2, 2013. Additional guests include Matt Olson, saxophone, Dave Sorenson, trombone, and Dave Stanoch, drums.
Under the direction of Dr. Kyle Mack, the Jazz Festival will feature over 15 regional high school jazz ensembles that will work with the guest artists throughout the weekend and participate in a concert on February 2 at 7:00 PM in Festival Concert Hall. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students and seniors.
Bassist/vocalist Kristin Korb tours internationally as a performer, clinician, and guest artist with numerous jazz ensembles. While studying privately with jazz bass icon Ray Brown, he arranged for her first recording with his trio, Introducing Kristin Korb, on Telarc Records. Her new release, In The Meantime, features her innovative arrangements of jazz standards with the help of jazz greats Bob Sheppard, Nick Mancini, Llew Matthews, Steve Barnes and Larry Koonse. When she’s not on the road with her trio (featuring Llew Matthews and Ryan Korb), she’s on the faculty at the University of Southern California and Azusa Pacific University.
Hailed as “one of the world’s most engaging and astonishingly versatile trumpeters” by Style Weekly, Yamaha Performing Artist Rex Richardson was named the 2008 Brass Herald Personality of the Year. A veteran of the renowned chamber ensemble Rhythm & Brass, jazz legend Joe Henderson’s Quintet, the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, the Brass Band of Battle Creek, and appearances with countless celebrity artists in multiple genres, he stays busy as a headline artist at international festivals and as a soloist with orchestras, jazz ensembles, brass bands and concert bands on five continents.
