Brian Burns has served as Director of Choral Activities at Clarke University, in Dubuque, Iowa, since 2009. At Clarke, he directs three choirs, teaches conducting and music education coursework, teaches musicology courses, and is the music director for the drama department’s productions. He holds degrees from the Universities of Delaware and Northern Colorado, and he is in the final phase toward completing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Oklahoma. He is the Minister of Music at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, also in Dubuque, and is an active guest conductor and clinician throughout the tri-state region.
Prior to his appointment at Clarke, Brian served on the faculty of Wayne State College, in Wayne, Nebraska. He has been an active church musician for over a decade and has also been the conductor of several community choruses in Pennsylvania and Colorado. He has taught music at every level from Kindergarten through college. In addition to his duties at Clarke and Holy Trinity, Brian serves as one of the music directors at the Grand Opera House in Dubuque, where he directs musical theater performances during the summer.
Following a production at the Grand this summer, Brian will lead the collegiate-level reading session at the Iowa Choral Directors Summer Symposium. He is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, the College Music Society, and Ph Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He lives in Dubuque with his wife, pianist Dr. Elaina Burns, and their beautiful son, Danny.
