Mike Coates' professional music career, both as a guitarist and as an audio engineer/producer, has been impressively vast and varied.
Coates toured for fifteen years with progressive rock bands WhiteWing and Asia, opened for many major touring artists such as Nazareth, Steely Dan, REO, and Styx, and his bands released three LPs, all of which are now internationally sought-after collectors items.
In 1983, Coates enrolled as a freshman at Minnesota State University Moorhead. The following year he was hired as the new Music Industry Program's electric and classical guitar instructor. Ten years later he earned his M.A. and was hired full-time as an Assistant Professor of Guitar and Audio Production.
Coates left academia in 1995 to launch his own recording studio/record label, Barking Dog Records/Raptor Studios, which, to date, has released eighty full-length titles and over one hundred concert recordings for the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony.
Coates currently teaches classical guitar for both NDSU and Concordia College, as well as serves as the audio specialist who oversees all NDSU recordings and live sound events in Beckwith Recital Hall and Festival Concert Hall.
Coates' classical guitar discography includes three flute/guitar CDs for the Harris-Coates duo and a CD of all Spanish and South American song with tenor, Ricardo Visus.
