Choral Music of the Americas Activities Continue

March 19, 2014

In May 2013 the North Dakota State University School of Music, in partnership with the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), hosted the Choral Music of the Americas Symposium in Fargo, ND.  Several activities have stemmed from this conference, including presentations throughout the country, instructional videos posted on the ACDA web site, guest editors of the Choral Journal and more.

The symposium focused on the choral repertoire of the Americas and the cultural and social influences that have guided the development of this music.  Presenters from throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico and South America discussed the techniques and history of the music of their cultures.  The Choral Music of the Americas symposium is the first time the music of the Western Hemisphere has been studied as a whole and the cultural implications have been tremendous.

Since the symposium was hosted last May, the coordinators have actively continued their discussions of Choral Music of the Americas in a variety of formats:

Dr. Jo Ann Miller, symposium coordinator/leader

  • Presented an academic paper at the ACDA Eastern Division conference in Baltimore, MD, February 7
  • Acted as guest contributor in the March 2014 issue of Choral Journal in which she identified the outcomes of the symposium

Dr. Charlette Moe, symposium coordinator

  • Presented an academic paper at the North Central ACDA conference in Des Moines, IA, March 19-22, where she discussed the diversity of the choral music in the Western Hemisphere
  • Acted as guest editor in the March 2014 issue of Choral Journal
  • Co-Edited the Choral Music of the Americas monograph, published by the ACDA
  • Coordinated the symposium’s educational videos available to members on the ACDA website.

Dr. Michael Weber, symposium coordinator

  • Acted as guest editor in the March 2014 issue of Choral Journal
  • Co-Edited the Choral Music of the Americas monograph, published by the ACDA.

John Miller, Director of NDSU’s Division of Performing Arts, said that “The CMotA symposium and the partnership with the American Choral Directors Association are only the beginnings of the local, national, and international emphases that NDSU brings to the performing arts.”

The NDSU School of Music and American Choral Directors Association are currently planning a fall 2015 Choral Music Symposium that will focus on 21st century American choral composers.
