Theatre NDSU presents a staged reading of select poems from Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters. First published in 1915, Masters’ text is considered a classic of American literature and poetry. Structured as a series of epitaphs, each poem is the posthumous confession of a resident of the fictional Midwestern town of Spoon River. This staging draws from a collection of over 200 such poems, bringing to life the flawed, complicated, and sometimes brutally honest citizens of a small Midwestern town.

Each poem gives the speaker one last chance to tell the truth about how they lived. Some brim with regret and bitterness; others with unexpected grace or dark humor. But taken together, Spoon River’s residents remind us that a life fully examined, however painful, is still a life worth celebrating.
