SECTION 324: OATH FOR TEACHERS

SOURCE: SBHE Policy Manual, Section 610

Every member of the academic staff, before entering upon the discharge of his or her duties, shall take an oath or affirmation as follows: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of North Dakota, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of my position, according to the best of my ability." The oath shall be executed in duplicate and one copy shall be filed at the appropriate dean's office, and one copy shall be retained by the academic staff member.

NOTE: The word "support" in this oath does not imply that any of the normal rights to academic freedom or political comment or criticism must be waived. To "support the Constitution" in this sense means instead to accept the basic system of government existing in this state and nation and to recognize an obligation to abide by the laws of North Dakota and the United States. "Academic staff" means faculty, lecturers and graduate teaching assistants.
