Welcome to the (Bio)chemistry Education Research Group (BERG) at North Dakota State University! Much of our work stems from the assumption that, similar to an iceberg, the majority of what and how our students think about the world lies below the surface. As researchers and instructors, our goal is to uncover student thinking in an effort to generate the empirical evidence necessary to inform the effective teaching and learning of undergraduate biochemistry, molecular biology, and chemistry.

Currently, our research focuses broadly on the mechanisms by which scientific expertise is developed in students.  Specifically, we are interested in (1) students’ abilities to apply the process of science, (2) undergraduates’ visualization skills in chemistry and biochemistry, and (3) the role of assessment in supporting the development of scientific expertise.
