EASTERN NORTH DAKOTA FIELD COURSE
FALL SEMESTER, 2009

1. CLASS MEETING TIMES - WEDNESDAYS, 5:00- 5:50 p.m., STEVENS ROOM 134, ON AUGUST 26th, SEPTEMBER 16th and 23rd. ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED AT EACH CLASS PERIOD.
2. FIELD TRIP FEE OF $40 estimated (FOR VEHICLE, CAMPING COSTS, FIELD GUIDE)  TO BE PAID TO MRS. PHYLLIS MURRAY, ROOM 218, STEVENS HALL, BY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 - NO REFUNDS. 
3. FIELD WEEKEND - SEPTEMBER 26-27 - LOAD BUS AT 7:30 A.M., DEPART  8:00 A.M., SATURDAY MORNING, STEVENS HALL PARKING LOT, RETURN 5:30 P.M. SATURDAY; SUNDAY ASSEMBLE 9:00 A.M. AT A LOCATION TO BE DETERMINED ALONG THE RED RIVER BIKE TRAIL.
4. FAILURE TO ATTEND THE PRE-TRIP CLASS SESSIONS AND BOTH DAYS OF THE FIELD COURSE WILL RESULT IN AN AUTOMATIC DROP

August 26 - Cretaceous deposits

Sept. 16 - Glacial deposits

Sept 23 - Glacial deposits

2. Letter grade will be based on:
 

• Score in a 20 question multiple-choice quiz administered at the last stop on Sunday (25%).
• Score on a 4 page paper with illustrations (or approved alternative) to be submitted by Monday, Nov. 23rd . The topic of the creative activity has to be on some aspect of the geology of eastern North Dakota approved by the instructor. The paper (50%) may be submitted as paper copy or as an html  file.
• Participation in the class and field exercizes (25%)
• Letter grade boundaries are 90-100 A, 80-89 B, 70-79 C, 60-69 D.

 

3. Preparation

CHECKLIST OF ITEMS TO BRING

Personal: rain gear; warm jacket; hat and gloves; sun glasses; sun screen

Meals: Pack lunches and snacks for both days

Gear day pack; water bottle;digital camera; field notebook / pencils; rock hammer (borrow from Department); safety glasses.
