Course description:

 

This course is designed to help students read more effectively at the college level.  A variety of reading strategies and such activities as lectures, discussions, conferences with the instructor, quizzes, graded and ungraded short writings, and readings in and out of class will be employed so that students can find approaches which work best for them.

 

Required text:

 

·         a novel, story collection, or nonfiction work you’ll choose.

·         Goshgarian, Gary ed. The Contemporary Reader. Seventh edition.

·         Knipfel, Jim.  Slackjaw: A Memoir.

 

Your semester grade will be determined by the following:

Policies

 

The class schedule will be distributed in small increments seldom exceeding one or two weeks; this will allow us maximum flexibility in addressing problems in reading and analysis.

 

Unannounced quizzes will be given fairly often, and they won’t be made up unless your absence is legitimate.  A paper’s grade will be lowered by one-third grade per day for each weekday it is late.

 

Don’t expect to make up work you’ve missed during an extended absence, especially if you haven’t been in touch during the absence.

 

You will get an F for plagiarized work.
