A Key to the superfamilies of the Lepidoptera
with special reference to North and South Dakota


 

4 (3). Wingspan more than 20 mm, fw with a jugum, antennae less than length of head and thorax.  Hind tibiae without spurs.  Superfamily Hepialoidea*

The single North American family is the Hepialidae, Ghost moths or Swifts. There are 537 species worldwide, 18 in North America and at least 2 species in North Dakota.

 

4.’ Wingspan less than 15 mm, fw may have a short basal lobe (fibula), antennae longer than head and thorax, hind tibiae with spurs. (These families are not known from the Dakotas)
