Current Topics in Genomics – Spring 2015

Physiological pathways define specific features that allow a biological organism to successfully compete in their environment. These pathways typically involve multiple proteins whose expression must be coordinated. The genes that encode the members of a pathway represent a small collection of the many genes in the genome of the organism. For this session of Current Topics in Genomics, you were asked to select a paper that covers a topic in physiological genomics. The three papers that will be reviewed are listed below and your discussion will focus on results related to a physiology response(s) of the organism. You will be the primary reviewer for your paper and a secondary reviewer for another paper.

Paper 1 (Primary: Wei Zhang; Secondary: Daniel Restrepo Montoya)

Arabidopsis miR156 regulates tolerance to recurring environmental stress through SPL transcription factors

Paper 2 (Primary: Daniel Restrepo Montoya; Secondary: Elliot Welker)

Investigation of sporulation in the Desulfotomaculum genus: a genomic comparison with the genera Bacillus and Clostridium

Paper 3 (Primary: Elliott Welker; Secondary: Wei Zhang)

How to kill the honey bee larva: genomic potential and virulence mechanisms of Paenibacillus larvae

As in the past, the primary reviewer will provide a detailed discussion of the paper. First you are to describe the specific physiological response(s) that are the focus of the paper. As a method to present all of the results and conclusions of the paper, you are to discuss each figure and table and explain how each represents an aspect of the materials and methods or supports the conclusion of the paper. Finally, you are to propose the next set of experiments that will help future researcher to better understand the physiological response.

The class will meet on Monday, May 11, 2015 at 2pm in Loftsgard Hall 260.
